Project 3: Jason Seiler

Jason Seiler was born on October 6, 1977 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He is an Illustrator who currently lives in Chicago with his wife and two daughters. In high school, he got in trouble for drawing caricatures of a teacher and was later hired by his principle to draw caricatures of the faculty members. Later, he moved to Chicago touring with bands and was focused on music. He later chose art over his music career. Seiler studied Fine Art Illustration at The American Academy of Art for two years. His works begin as sketches and paintings before working on them digitally in Photoshop. Seiler is very talented and his works have been featured in TIME, MAD magazine, Disney, as well as many others. Seiler’s illustrations are very humorous and well known. He also teaches an online course at http://www.schoolism.com/school.php?id=8. On Seiler’s website, he briefly discusses his creative process for his artwork. He explains that he likes traditional painting, but most of his clients have short deadlines, which is why he paints his work digitally on a 21″ Cintiq. Seiler quotes his good friend Bobby Chui in that the Cintiq is like “magic paper” because you paint and draw on the surface as if you were doing it traditionally. He also explains that painting digitally allows for more corrections and changes. Seiler also prefers to photograph his subjects himself to ensure the lighting and expressions are exactly the way he wants them to be.
